Founded in 1876, the Society of the Spirit of Jesus changed its name 12 years later to the Society of the Priests of St Francis de Sales. It was created by Father Henri Chaumont with the encouragement of Msgr Gaston de Ségur and Mme Caroline Carré de Malberg.
Priests of St. Francis de Sales are diocesan priests, each belonging to his own diocese and bishop. They serve according to the charism expressed by their founder, Father Henri Chaumont. This charism is based upon the teachings of St. Francis de Sales including the desire to be filled with the Holy Spirit, humility and gentleness; the need for fellowship and friendship among priests; and to serve as “spiritual directors” for lay Christians near and far.
The principal inspirations were the Acts of the Apostles and St. Francis de Sales, as a model of a pastor.
Father Henry Chaumont wanted to respond to 2 particular needs:
- Desire for spiritual directors for lay persons and religious.
- Desire for fraternity and friendship among diocesan clergy to combat isolation, discouragement and withdrawal.
This brief description of the origins, inspiration and needs will help to distinguish a little of the character of the Society of the Priests of St. Francis de Sales among others that are also at the service of diocesan priests and deacons.
